It's here! The Kickstarter is live, and you can finally back it to reserve your copy of the Gulf Coast Tarot Deck! We're also sharing a link to the project's video, a collection of animations by Sarah, and some upcoming Fall Events.

Kickstarter Launch!

Over the last few months, we've been hard at work on preparations for our first Kickstarter Campaign. It's entailed a lot of preparatory work that we're not used to with our normal projects, but we wanted to give it a try to see if we could reach a larger audience for this project. We knew we would need to work with an outside printer to produce cards that could hold up to everyday usage, and in doing so we would need to spend more money upfront to produce the project. Also, as with comics, a deck requires a lot of illustration and conceptual labor to complete, so 'going big' with this project makes a lot more sense if we want to cover costs for all of the work that's gone into the project!.

At present, we have three options for decks:

Our standard deck, with planned 2.75" x 3.75" cards, digitally printed on premium cardstock, for $40 + shipping.
Our deluxe package, which includes the standard deck + an interpretive guide, sticker pack, reading cloth, and a major arcana art print, and is $100 + shipping
Our special edition deck, which is a risograph printed art object, with all 78 cards printed in house at Mystic Multiples at a larger 4.25" x 7", and will include the other special items from the campaign for $250 + shipping. This is a limited edition deck, with an estimated edition size of 80-90 decks.

At this point, I'm happy to announce that we reached our minimum budget, and the project will launch at the end of this month! 🎉

We plan to add updates on Kickstarter for all backers, including some production notes, possible stretch goals, and release timing throughout the month of September. And if you have any questions about the decks, we're also monitoring comments there for additional FAQ entries. In short, you'll want to head there for updates during the campaign's 30 day window.

Making this video was a real challenge, with several starts and stops. Eventually, we got the structure where we wanted, but it took some doing to get to the final version. We shot most of the footage with our Sony A6000 camera, or with our smart phones, and edited the footage in Kdenlive, which is a very nice open source video editor. James later added narration, field recordings, and background music from an Organelle M to the video.

Quick Animations by Sarah!

We've sprinkled some new animations by Sarah into this newsletter, and hope you've enjoyed them! These ones were drawn on tracing paper, and then quickly scanned into Photoshop for gifs. From there, we also made mp4 files to add into the video project. Making video work was an interesting process for us, and maybe we'll explore it further on a future project?
